2 – Fall

Potato Harvest Party

Potato Harvest Party

Thankfully, as summer turns into fall the weeds start to grow more slowly.  This is really critical considering that we have more and more produce to harvest.  As early fall turns into late fall we start our busiest time of year, picking storage vegetables for the winter.

We have to put our firewood in storage, tidy up the farm for winter and, as close to freeze up as possible, we do our ploughing.  Ploughing late in the year provides us with the most nutrients from any “green manure” we grew for fertilizer while giving us some weed control as most of the perennial weeds will be dead by spring.  We spread manure immediately before ploughing.
