3 – Our Meat

Mid Summer Pasture

Mid Summer Pasture

Our Ecologically Responsible Meat

There are a lot of reasons why this “vegetable farm” keeps sheep:  Sheep can convert grass into great tasting meat, Sheep help us control our worst weeds and some other vegetable pests, Sheep cycle nutrients around our farm and place them where the vegetables need them most, Sheep eat hay and grain we bring into our farm during the winter, providing our vegetables with much needed nutrients (manure and bedding), Sheep balance our labour requirements throughout the seasons (they are easy to keep during our busy summer and take more care during the colder months), the list could go on…

So, there are a lot of reasons that we like the way sheep mesh into our farm system.  There is another reason I think that sheep are a particularly good fit for Atlantic Canada’s climate:  Sheep eat grass and Atlantic Canada grows grass better than any other crop.  We have to grow grass to maintain healthy soil as part of our Vegetable Crop Rotation.

We do not believe in systematic use of drugs (such as antibiotics).

Brand New Triplets – 2010

Our entire flock has grown from 3 ewes we purchased in 2006 and will hit 100 ewes by 2013.

Sheep make very efficient meat. For us, feeding of stored feed requires fuel and time; sheep grow the most meat with the least stored feed. Consider that most ewes have twins and the lambs are pasture fed during the summer at which time they are ready for market. This means almost two market lambs (that are fed virtually no stored feed) are produced for each ewe every year.
Lots of fresh air and space has enabled us to grow very healthy lambs that rarely require health interventions.

Buying our Lamb
We sell all of our lamb as freezer orders (by the lamb or side) in the fall (October). We have an excellent meat cutter who personalizes every order to ensure you get the cuts you want.  As our flock grows we anticipate selling cuts of lamb and mutton. Please leave us a message if you are interested in ordering lamb and we will provide answers to your questions, delivery options and dates and more.
